Fakeout is a free game made by one person. These terms are written in plain language on purpose — the point is to set expectations, not to build a legal fortress. By playing or making an account, you're agreeing to them.
No warranty
Fakeout is provided as-is. It's an active, actively-changing project — features move, balance shifts, and things occasionally break. We don't promise uptime, don't promise your progress will always be there, and don't promise the game will always work exactly the way it does today. Your XP, cosmetics and settings are stored in your own browser, so clearing your site data loses them. Accounts, ratings and ranked match history live on our server, but even those are kept on a best-effort basis. There's no purchase involved, and nothing here is a promise of a particular rating, rank or leaderboard spot.
Accounts
An account is optional for casual play and required for ranked. Keep your sign-in to yourself, and use a handle you'd be fine saying out loud; we may change or remove a handle that's abusive or impersonates someone. You can stop using an account whenever you like, and you can ask us to delete it (see the privacy policy). Fakeout is for people 13 and older, or the age of digital consent where you live if that's higher; it isn't directed at children under 13.
Play fair
Don't cheat. That covers automation, input macros that play the game for you, exploiting bugs to gain an unfair advantage, or interfering with the game server or other players' connections. We reserve the right to restrict access, or to adjust or reset ratings that cheating or a bug has distorted, for anyone doing this.
Ranked
Ranked is live: it needs an account, it's full human 4v4 with no bots, and your rating changes when the match ends. Leaving a ranked match early counts against you, and the server enforces it: a short window to reconnect, then a loss for that match and a lockout from the ranked queue that gets longer if you do it repeatedly. Casual play carries no penalty.
Conduct in chat
Online chat (team and all) is for calling plays and being decent to the people you're playing with, and we hold it to one standard: no profanity, no sexual content, no threats or violence aimed at anyone, no harassment. Every typed message runs through an automatic content filter on your device and again on the game server before anyone sees it, and a blocked message is delivered to nobody. Repeated violations climb a ladder tied to your account — a warning first, then short text mutes, then longer ones for a pattern. Muting only ever affects free text; the quickchat macros that call out plays stay available at every rung, so a mute never benches you from your team. Handles are held to the same standard. No filter catches everything, so the people you play with can report you too, and a person reads those reports. We may mute, lock out of ranked, or remove anyone who's abusive, and we may switch typed chat off entirely if it's being abused. Moderation is still evolving, so expect the details to change.
Friends and parties
Friend requests, room invites and parties are held to the same standard as chat. Don't use them to pester anyone; a block is final from their side, and we may take the ability to add or invite friends away from anyone who abuses it. Friends can see whether you're online and roughly where you're playing unless you choose to appear offline. Parties play casual matches and private rooms together; ranked stays solo.
Shared replays
A replay you share is public to anyone with its link, and it stays up until we're asked to take it down. Don't share anything you wouldn't want other people to see. If you want a link removed, email us.
Intellectual property
Fakeout's game modes, maps, code, art and text are its own. It's an independent game, not anyone's product or an official successor to any other. Don't pass off Fakeout's work as yours; ordinary play, streaming and sharing clips and replays are welcome.
The spirit of these terms
We're not trying to specify a jurisdiction or write around edge cases nobody will ever hit. If a dispute ever comes up, we'll try to resolve it the way we'd want it resolved as a player: reasonably, and in good faith. These terms may be updated as the game grows — when they change materially, we'll note it here and move the date above.
